Applegate Campaign Slams Donald Trump's Endorsement of Darrell Issa

Solana Beach, Calif. - In response to Donald Trump's endorsement of Darrell Issa on Twitter, Robert Dempsey, Applegate's campaign manager, released the following statement:

"Darrell Issa once again shows why he's unfit to represent this district in Congress. When he's not busy lining his own pockets, he's trying to score political brownie points with one of the least qualified candidates for president in the history of the United States," said Robert Dempsey, Applegate's campaign manager. "I guess Issa couldn't help himself in showing the voters of this district that he really is a mini-Trump who will always put party before country."

Colonel Applegate Releases Two New Ads: It's Time to Put Politics Aside and Put Country First

Criticizes Issa's continued support of Donald Trump, highlights Applegate’s focus on problem solving

Today the Applegate for Congress campaign released two new television ads, "Still" and "Face It." "Still" criticizes Congressman Darrell Issa for his continued support of Donald Trump’s campaign despite Trump bragging about groping women and numerous sexual assault allegations.  "Face It" highlights Colonel Applegate's service to our country as a Marine Colonel and his plan to put political games aside and put country first in Congress.

WATCH "STILL"

WATCH "FACE IT"

“Darrell Issa's continued support of Donald Trump, despite numerous women coming forward with sexual assault allegations, is further proof the Issa will always put party before country,” said Robert Dempsey, Applegate’s campaign manager. "Colonel Applegate doesn't care about playing politics, he cares about delivering real results. That's what the people of the 49th deserve and we need to send a Marine Colonel to fix the broken Congress."

These ads are the fourth and fifth released by the Applegate campaign. The first, “Lined Pockets” links Issa to his presidential pick Donald Trump and questions how Issa became over $200 million richer in Congress. Issa responded with a threatening letter in an attempt to distract from the issues. Likewise, Issa gave a weak knee-jerk response to Applegate’s second ad “Everything Changed,” which criticized Issa for voting against the 9/11 first responder bill and saying he had done enough for what he called “simply" a plane crash. The third "Access", condemned Congressman Darrell Issa for taking an official role on Donald Trump’s campaign on the same day disgusting tapes were released in which Trump brags about sexual assault.

"Still” and "Face It" will air on broadcast and cable in the 49th Congressional District.

“Still” Script:

Newscaster:

Several women speaking out accusing Donald Trump of touching them.

Narrator:

Colonel Applegate:

It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time to put politics aside and put country first.

I’m Colonel Doug Applegate and I approve this message because I’ll always fight for you.

"Face It" Script:

Colonel Applegate:

Let's face it, something's wrong.

The system's broken.

Congress is broken.

Politicians?

They don't represent us.

It doesn't have to be this way.

I'm Colonel Doug Applegate.

I'm not a politician.

I'm a Marine.

End Citizens United Endorses Doug Applegate for Congress

For Immediate Release

Monday, October 31, 2016

Contact: Adam Bozzi, adam@endcitizensunited.org

End Citizens United has endorsed Doug Applegate for Congress. Applegate is running to represent California’s 49th Congressional district.

End Citizens United (ECU) is a grassroots-funded organization that is dedicated to electing members of Congress who, like Applegate, will fight to overturn Citizens United and to pass campaign finance reform that will remove unlimited, secret money from our political system.

“Colonel Applegate spent his career protecting our nation, and now he’s running for Congress to empower Californians, who’ve been silenced by a small group of billionaires and special interests,” said Tiffany Muller, Executive Director of ECU. “While Col. Applegate is committed to reforming our campaign finance system and making sure that Washington works for middle-class families, his opponent has been one of the leading contributors to the dysfunction and gridlock in Congress. Darrell Issa has wasted taxpayer money on politically motivated investigations and pushed for laws that benefit his wealthy, special interest allies, not the American people.”

“I strongly oppose the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United, which provides big money donors with an outsized voice in our electoral process,” said Applegate. “The voices of the American people should not be drowned out by large corporations and extremely wealthy donors. I am committed to working with End Citizens United to close campaign finance loopholes and bring transparency to the democratic process.”

The Cook Political Report has rated the campaign for the 49th district a tossup, as weeks of polling have shown Applegate now in dead heat with Issa.

End Citizens United PAC was established in March 2015 to counter the disastrous effects of Citizens United and reform our campaign finance system. To date, more than 1.5 million grassroots members from every state and territory have taken action to support End Citizens United.

Human Rights Campaign Endorses Colonel Doug Applegate for Congress

Today, the Human Rights Campaign announced their endorsement for Retired Marine Colonel Doug Applegate in his campaign to unseat vulnerable Congressman Darrell Issa. The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, representing a force of more than 1.5 million members and supporters nationwide.

“Doug Applegate is someone who will work to ensure that everyone, including LGBTQ people, can one day live free from fear of discrimination," said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. "The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse Doug Applegate, who will be an important ally as we fight to pass the Equality Act, which will help ensure full federal equality for LGBTQ people and equal treatment under the law.”

“I’m very honored to receive the Human Rights Campaign's endorsement,” said Colonel Doug Applegate."Throughout our community, the Human Rights Campaign fights passionately to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer equality. Time and again, my opponent Darrell Issa has voted with his party and not to protect LGBTQ rights, even receiving a shameful 32% on HRC's report card. If elected, I will stand by our LGBTQ friends, family, and service members and tirelessly fight until we achieve full equality for all."

Colonel Doug Applegate Calls on Congress to Immediately Halt Bonus Collections of California National Guard Servicemembers

Solana Beach, Calif. - In response to recent news reports that the Department of Defense is seeking repayments on enlistment bonuses from nearly 10,000 California National Guard veterans and servicemembers, Colonel Doug Applegate released the following statement:

“As a retired Marine Colonel, I understand the struggles our veterans face upon return to civilian life. These men and women put their lives on the line to serve our country and they earned and deserved these payments. It's outrageous that veterans are the ones who are suffering because of clerical errors made by others. The California National Guard and Department of Defense should immediately halt these collection efforts and Congress should immediately vote on legislation that will fix this unconscionable burden on our veterans

“This is what happens when politicians spend more time fighting with each other than solving problems. Instead of picking partisan fights, Darrell Issa should have been fighting for our veterans."

Colonel Applegate’s New Ad: Say No to Trump and Issa

Ad Connects Issa with “Trump Tapes”

Today the Applegate for Congress campaign released its third television ad, “Access,” this time criticizing Congressman Darrell Issa for taking an official role on Donald Trump’s campaign on the same day disgusting tapes were released in which Trump brags about sexual assault.

WATCH “ACCESS"

Last Friday, Trump appointed Issa to his National Security Advisory Council, despite the fact Issa has lied about his military record. Last week a poll also showed Colonel Applegate taking the lead for the first time in this competitive district.

“The videos leaked last week showed us once again that Trump is unfit to be Commander-in-Chief, but Darrell Issa continues to support him and even joined his campaign. That’s the definition of putting politics ahead of country and voters deserve to know,” said Robert Dempsey, Applegate’s campaign manager.

This is the third ad released by the Applegate campaign.

“Access” will air on broadcast and cable in the 49th Congressional District.

Applegate Calls Trump Video Disgusting

Today, the Washington Post reported that Donald Trump “bragged in vulgar terms about kissing, groping, and trying to have sex with women” in a recently uncovered audio recording. Colonel Doug Applegate released the following statement condemning the latest unacceptable remarks from the Congressman Darrell Issa’s presidential pick:

First Responder: Issa’s Lip Service is Disgraceful

Jaime Hazan, a former emergency medical technician who suffered a permanent disability after voluntarily responding to the 9/11 attacks, today reacted to Congressman Darrell Issa trying to contradict the statements Hazan made in TV ad. This is the second time in a week Issa shamelessly responded to ads exposing his record; last week his lawyers sent a groundless letter to the Applegate campaign to distract from the fact he used the system to line his own pockets.

“It’s disgraceful that Congressman Darrell Issa is attacking the validity of my concerns. Issa voted against our health care benefits and defended his opposition by saying 9/11 was simply a plane crash. Tell that to the people who were at Ground Zero that day.

“Now, he's reinventing his record, and it's up to voters to decide whether that's political or patriotic.”

Just days after 9/11, Congressman Issa refused to vote on a first responder healthcare bill and later lied about it. When it came time to extend their health care benefits, Issa voted no and defended his opposition by saying 9/11 was “simply” a plane crash. Only once an extension of the Zadroga Act was part of a much larger ‘must-pass’ bill did Issa vote for it.

A new poll released today showed Colonel Doug Applegate taking the lead ahead of Issa for the first time.

Rothbenberg & Gonzales Upgrades Applegate-Issa as Race Tightens

Change Comes as Issa Threatens Embarrassing Legal Action and  Colonel Applegate Refuses to Back Down

Today one of the nation’s most prominent political handicappers upgraded the race between Retired Marine Colonel Doug Applegate and Trump-supporting Congressman Darrell Issa. News also broke today that Issa is threatening legal action – and demanding a ridiculous apology - over an Applegate campaign ad that is accurate and well-sourced. It is clear that Issa is afraid the ad finally exposes his real record of gaming the system.

From the Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report:

California’s 49th District….[i]nterest in the race began when the congressman finished narrowly ahead of Democrat Doug Applegate, 51-46 percent, in the June primary…Outside groups are actively assessing the seriousness of the race, and we’ll see if Democrats spend the money necessary to win. As the richest Member of Congress, Issa has the ability to spend Democrats into oblivion, but he better leverage that advantage soon, if he’s going to at all. Move from Safe Republican to Republican Favored.”

From Daily Kos:

“Issa, who represents California’s 49th Congressional District in suburban San Diego, faces his toughest re-election campaign in forever, thanks to Daily Kos-endorsed Democrat Doug Applegate, a retired Marine colonel who, unlike his opponent, isn’t afraid of the rough and tumble. Applegate recently started airing his first TV ad of the race, a hard-hitting spot in which he directly links Issa to Trump.

…So how did Issa react? Like the cowardly whiner that he is, he’s threatening to file a lawsuit alleging that Applegate has defamed him…”

Statement from Retired Marine Colonel Doug Applegate regarding the threat of a lawsuit:

"I’m a Marine Colonel who volunteered to go to Iraq in 2006 and spent a good chunk of my tour in Ramadi. Congressman Issa’s money and lawyers don't scare me one bit. It's incredible that someone whose career consists of conducting costly, partisan investigations is so thin-skinned. Clearly, Congressman Issa doesn’t want to talk about how he made millions as a member of Congress while consistently failing to improve the lives of California families. I'm not going to back down from a politician who puts his party ahead of what's best for our country—not today, not ever."

Applegate Calls Out Issa for Disrespecting 9/11 Victims and Families

Solana Beach, Calif. - Retired Marine Colonel Doug Applegate today released the following statement after Congressman Darrell Issa voted against allowing the families of victims of the 9/11 terror attacks to seek justice:

“Once again, Darrell Issa has shown an incredible lack of respect for 9/11 first responders and families. As if calling 9/11 'simply' a plane crash and then voting against health benefits for 9/11 first responders wasn’t bad enough, today the Congressman voted against allowing 9/11 families to sue the Saudi Government for funding terrorism.

“Congressman Issa’s continued failure to understand the impact of 9/11 and the justice that families deserve is another reminder that we need someone in Congress who puts our country’s interests over their own partisan interests.”

"Lined Pockets" Links Issa and Trump

Solana Beach, CA  - The Doug Applegate for Congress campaign has released "Lined Pockets," a new TV ad airing on broadcast and cable television in the media market encompassing California's 49th District.

The ad highlights Congressman Darrell Issa's endorsement and similarities to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Specifically, the ad hits Issa for steering taxpayer money to help properties he owned. Issa is the wealthiest member of Congress and his wealth increased to over two hundred fifty million dollars during his time in Congress.

"Congressman Darrell Issa is exactly what's wrong with Washington, and southern California voters deserve to know that," said Robert Dempsey, Applegate's campaign manager. "Colonel Doug Applegate will always but the country before any political agenda."

STATEMENTS FROM PRISCILLA GRECO AND COLONEL DOUG APPLEGATE REGARDING DESPERATE ATTACKS FROM DARRELL ISSA

SAN DIEGO, CA – Today candidate for congress in California’s 49th congressional district and his ex-wife Priscilla Greco released the following statements in response to misleading personal attacks from career partisan politician Congressman Darrell Issa.

Priscilla Greco: “I’m disappointed that someone is making disrespectful and uninformed personal attacks against our family. Doug and I are parents first, and we raised two amazing children together. I support his run for Congress and I will be voting for him in November.”

Colonel Doug Applegate: “This is a desperate and politically motivated attack from Congressman Darrel Issa on my family.  I love my family and couldn’t be more proud of the children I’ve raised with Priscilla. This kind of dirty personal attack is exactly what’s wrong with politics and voters deserve better. Attorney General Harris calls Doug Applegate "The leader we need in Congress"

San Diego, CA - Doug Applegate today received the endorsement of California Attorney General and candidate for United States Senate Kamala Harris.

"Marine Colonel Doug Applegate is the leader California needs in the House of Representatives," said Harris. "Californians are tired of the political rhetoric that attempts to pit entire communities against each other, and they are frustrated by politicians in Washington who prioritize divisive political fights over passing legislation and getting things done. Doug knows what it means to put the people of California and this country first, and I'm proud to endorse his campaign."

In 1974, Applegate joined the United States Marine Corps, just a few months before the fall of Saigon. Initially serving as an Infantry Officer, Applegate went on to become a Judge Advocate. From there, Applegate has had a successful career as both a small business owner and an attorney, while continuing to serve his country in the Marine Corps Reserve. Applegate retired from the Corps in 2006 after 32 years of service, both active and reserve.

"I am honored to receive this important endorsement. Kamala Harris has served our state well and I know she will take those same attributes that have made her such an effective Attorney General to the Senate. I greatly admire what she has done for the people of our state and, if elected, I look forward to working with her in Congress," said Colonel Applegate.

NEW POLL: Applegate and Issa In Statistical Dead Heat in CA-49

Trump Continues to Drag Down Issa

A new poll released today by Strategies 360 shows Colonel Doug Applegate and vulnerable Congressman Darrell Issa remain in a statistical dead heat in the race for California’s 49th Congressional District. Even after Congressman Issa out-spent Applegate 15-to-1 in the primary and has sent at at least three pieces of mail to potential voters in the general election, Applegate trails the incumbent by only three points -- 45-42 percent -- well within the margin of error. Read the detailed polling memo here.

“This poll shows that voters are tired of Congressman Issa continually putting party before country,” said Robert Dempsey, Applegate’s campaign manager, “and that they want an independent leader like Colonel Applegate.”

The poll shows Donald Trump continues to drag down Issa, a vocal supporter of the toxic Republican presidential candidate. Hillary Clinton leads Trump by five points, 46-41 percent, and Trump’s favorability-unfavorability rating among Independents is a striking 21-75 percent. Voters registered No Party Preference (NPP) favor Applegate 51-33 percent.

Despite being outspent 15-to-1, Applegate performed better against Issa in the June primary than any previous challenger in Issa’s 15-year congressional career. A poll released shortly after also showed the two tied.

A recent Wall Street Journal article profiled the competitive race and the New York Times this weekend noted it as a prime pickup opportunity.

Sandra Fluke Endorses Doug Applegate for Congress

Applegate Challenging Anti-Women Incumbent Darrell Issa

Today social justice attorney Sandra Fluke endorsed Colonel Doug Applegate for Congress in California’s 49th Congressional District. Applegate is challenging vulnerable Republican Rep. Darrell Issa.

In 2012 Issa, then Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, held a hearing on insurance coverage for reproductive health under the Affordable Care Act. The panel was all-male, in part because Issa refused to let Fluke testify. It was at this hearing that Rep. Carolyn Maloney famously asked, “where are the women?”

“I know firsthand that Rep. Darrel Issa is exactly what is wrong with Washington,” said Fluke. “I trust Colonel Doug Applegate to defend women’s rights and access to healthcare, unlike Issa who continues to wage partisan crusades.”

Issa supported a constitutional amendment that would outlaw abortion. Issa also voted many times to cut preventative care for women, including birth control and cancer screenings. Issa even voted against protecting working women from being fired for using birth control.

As Trump Doubles Down on Offensive Comments, Issa Remains Silent

Donald J. Trump continues to stir up a maelstrom of controversy in the wake of his statements about Ghazala and Khizr Khan, parents of United States Army Captain Humayun Khan, who sacrificed his life in service to our country. California Congressman Darrell Issa has remained silent and not denounced these declarations, in tacit approval of Trump’s comments. Today, Retired Marine Colonel Doug Applegate, who is challenging Issa to represent the 49th District, issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump’s comments regarding a Gold Star military family have left me outraged. What he said was an insult to US Army Captain Humayun Khan’s service and memory. Trump once again proved his ignorance and why he is unfit to lead.

By remaining silent on Trump's remarks, Darrell Issa is displaying his willingness to do and say - or not say - whatever it takes to score political favors. After all, he was ousted from his committee chairmanship by party leaders after one too many wild goose chases. This is just another instance of Darrell being tone-deaf. We deserve better.

Today, my campaign is launching a petition calling on Darrell Issa to publicly denounce the comments made by Donald Trump and demonstrate the leadership we expect of our elected officials.”

Colonel Doug Applegate served in the United States Marine Corps for 32 years both on active and reserve duty. He retired in 2006 after completing a combat tour in Ramadi, Baghdad, and Fallujah. Doug has advised Marine commanders, defended and prosecuted war crimes, and conducted complex civil and criminal trials. Doug has lived and worked in California’s 49th Congressional District since being stationed at Camp Pendleton in 1981.
